Just recently, Spike lee was being interviewed and had made comment on Tyler Perry's films. It was rather interesting because he covered himself by saying he doesn't expect him to make the movies he makes, but to do better than what he is doing. He also compared his to Amos and Andy referring to the buffoonery of his characters and plots.
In my opinion, his stories are not that great, nor original with the exception of " A Family That Preys". His "real" characters are weak and always vulnerable. His content tends to dumb down our thoughts, because though a story of hope you have seen it before (Once again the exception, "A Family That Preys" Sanaa getting slapped shocked, yet satisfied me.) His films can be so familiar at times that I feel that his material is dated. I don't think there has ever been a time where I could not figure out what was going to happen in a Tyler Perry movie or play.
On the flip side, I can't knock his hustle totally. He did something that most don't do; he created a brand. People swear by that brand in both his movies and his plays. All of the things that I hate about his stuff... the average viewer loves. I also think if we created things to off set his material, we would not have too much of a problem with his stuff. Overall I think Spike I right about Tyler's work. What do you think?
Well to be honest, I have not seen "A Family That Prays" but will be picking it up tonight on my way home. Coming from a background in theater, most of the movies were made from plays, granted, in theater the characters are always going to be more colorful, because of the lack of facial expressions seen by the audience, the character has to project outward by being loud or campy (right word use, maybe?). To be very honest, I loved "Meet the Browns" as a play, funniest play I have ever seen. Movie sucked a bit (kinda like with Rent). Bit it is to be expected. Regardless of characters, dumbed down is what is asked for by general public, not all of us are as smart as the next person and need that extra "Oh" line of dialogue that explains what just happened. Now, yes, he is a brand and people do follow that brand, but people are fickle and will eventually want something else. What this means for Mr. Perry is that he will have to eventually regroup and restructure, because you can only keep doing the same thing for so long. But, for now, I like his movies, they are entertaining and fun to watch and its nice to have good things happen at the end of a movie, rather than the entire cast dying. Thanks for listening to me ramble.
